Background: A major labor crisis is shaping up in the Latin American nation in Uruguay. The latest national labour union to go on strike is the gas workers, who walked off the job in Montevideo Saturday( 8 Oct.). A general strike is planned for Montevideo Tuesday ( 11 Oct. ).
Labour unrest has been growing in Uruguay since employers fell behind in payments of a pay raise recently granted to workers in many fields, including construction, meat cutting, and now gas workers.
The gas workers held a mass rally outside the National Legislature Saturday, where leaders delivered spirited speechs.
A general strike, affecting thousands of workers is planned for Tuesday( 11 Oct.).
The Uruguay government Friday( 7 Oct) expelled four Russian diplomats, who, they said, were adding to the general labor unrest and who had incited strikes. The four officials, Sergei Yangaykin, Nikolai Ivanov, Aleksey Zudin, and Vladimir Shvetz left by plane from Montevideo for the Soviet Union.
