Background: The President of the Senate and acting State President, Senator MARAIS VILJOEN, has been nominated as the National Party's candidate for the State Presidency. He was nominated at a party caucus meeting in Cape Town today in which the Minister of Transport, Mr S.L. MULLER, was the other contender.

In keeping with custom at the election of a candidate for the State Presidency, the number of votes was not made public. South Africa's next President will be electoral College on Tuesday. Its considered a foregone conclusion that senator VILJOEN ell become South Africa's next head-of-state because of the National Party's overwhelming majority in the Electoral College.
