  • Description

Butchers in Nairobi are refusing to sell meat because of a dispute with the Kenya Meat Commission over prices -- and have warned that unless a solution is found, the boycott will spread to the rest of the country from today (thursday, 13 February.

The butchers' union claims that the Government has authorised the Commission to raise its wholesale prices but has refused to allow the butchers to put up their retail prices.

Their refusal to buy meat supplied by the Commission began last week. The butchers have also refused to buy meat from elsewhere, saying that it was not profitable to do so.

On Wednesday after a meeting with the Government, the butchers' union warned that unless the Government intervened, their affiliated unions would take action and there would be no meat in any part of the country from today.
