  • Description

THE GREEK PRIME MINISTER. MR STEPHANOS STEPHANOPOULOS, SAID IN ATHENS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) THAT HIS GOVERNMENT WOULD NOT RECOGNISE NEW BISHOPS, TRANSFERRED FROM OTHER POSTS BY LEADERS OF THE GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH IN DEFIANCE OF THE PRESENT LAW.

A POLICE CORDON WAS THROWN AROUND ATHENS CATHEDRAL AND THE ARCHBISHOPRIC YESTERDAY AS DEMONSTRATORS FROM VARIOUS RELIGIOUS ORGANISATIONS VOICED OPPOSITION TO THE CHURCH'S MOVE.

38 OF THE 51 MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH HIERARCHY, HEADED BY 84-YEAR-OLD ARCHBISHOP PRIMATE CHRYSSOSTOMOS, MET AGAIN TODAY AND APPOINTED ONE BISHOP AND THREE ARCHIMANDRITES (ABBOTS).

THIS BROUGHT TO EIGHT THE TOTAL OF VACANT DIOCESES FILLED IN THE LAST TWO DAYS. POLICE TRIED TO PREVENT THE CHURCH LEADERS MEETING AT ATHENS CATHEDRAL. PARLIAMENT PASSED A LAW SIX YEARS AGO STIPULATING THAT A BISHOP COULD NOT BE TRANSFERRED FROM HIS DIOCESE.

MR STEPHANOPOULOS HAS SAID HE INTENDS TO DO AWAY WITH THIS LAW, BUT HAS ASKED THE BISHOPS NOT TO PROCEED WITH ELECTIONS UNTIL PARLIAMENT APPROVES THIS ACTION.

THE CATHEDRAL SQUARE WAS OCCUPIED YESTERDAY BY DEMONSTRATORS WHO WAVED PLACARDS AND SHOUTED SLOGANS AGAINST THE BISHOPS TAKING PART IN THE TRANSFER. POLICE DISPERSED THEM WHEN THEY TRIED TO MARCH ON THE NEARBY OFFICES OF THE HOLY SYNOD. SEVERAL ARRESTS WERE MADE.
