  • Description

IN ALABAMA THE FIRST MAJOR SCHOOL INTEGRATION CRISIS TO CONFRONT PRESIDENT JOHNSON CAME YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) WHEN SIX NEGRO STUDENTS WERE TURNED AWAY FROM NOTASULGA'S ONLY WHITE HIGH SCHOOL.

THE TROUBLE STARTED WHEN 12 NEGRO STUDENTS LEFT THE NEARBY TUSKEGEE HIGH SCHOOL WHICH WAS CLOSED BY THE STATE SCHOOL BOARD FRIDAY BECAUSE IT HAD BEEN BOYCOTTED BY ITS ENTIRE WHITE STUDENT BODY SINCE LAST SEPTEMBER FOLLOWING INTEGRATION. THIS LEFT 13 TEACHERS TO TEACH ECONOMICALLY UNSOUND.

THE NEGROES LEFT IN TWO BUSES. SIX WENT TO SHORTER AND SIX TO NOTASULGA. AT SHORTER THERE WAS NO TROUBLE--THE SIX STUDENTS WERE ADMITTED WITHOUT INCIDENT. BUT AT NOTASULGA THE BUS CARRYING THE STUDENTS WAS MET BY ABOUT 100 STATE POLICE AND SOME 50 WHITE PEOPLE. AS THE BUS STOPPED A 23 YEAR-OLD WHITE PHOTOGRAPHER, WHO HAD BEEN RIDING WITH THE NEGROES, WAS BEATEN UP, AND THE ANGRY CROWD JOSTLED WITH NEWSMEN.

WHEN THE STUDENTS ARRIVED AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE SCHOOL THEY WERE MET BY MAYOR JAMES REA. HE TOLD THE NEGROES THAT HE WAS ACTING AS THE NEWLY DESIGNATED FIRE AND SAFETY INSPECTOR AND THAT HE HAD DETERMINED THE SCHOOL WAS ALREADY OVERCROWDED AND NO MORE STUDENTS OF ANY RACE COULD BE ADMITTED.
