  • Description

In Israel, a stormy, three-day round of talks on Palestinian autonomy ended on Tuesday (7 August) with agreement on a few matters but with continuing conflict on fundamental issues. Israel remains fiercely at odds with the United States and Egypt over how much freedom should be extended to Palestinians of the Jordan's West Bank and Gaza.

SYNOPSIS: The latest round of talks has been the most bitter o the five sessions held since autonomy talks started last May. Israeli Interior Minister Yosef Burg warned at the end of Monday's session (6 August) that his government might re-think it's peace treaty obligations to Egypt-- whose delegation was headed by Prime Minister Mustafa Khalid -- if there is any attempt to insert a statement on Palestinian rights into a new version of United Nations Resolution 242. The resolution is the 1967 formula on which Middle East Peace efforts have been based.
