  • Description

A mice plague this month is causing widespread damage in the Darling Down area of Queensland, Australia. In the Mount Tyson district large stacks of bagged grain collapse from the attacks of the mice.

Dense hordes of mice in broad daylight nibble at spilled grain. On the outskirts of Mount Tyson a large part of a field of growing wheat is eaten to the ground.

In other areas, the mice have invaded homes, eating leather goods and food and gnawing at furniture and clothing.

So dense is the plague that dogs and cats are no longer interested in killing the invaders.

Wheat growers in the Mount Tyson area are now building mice-proof stands on which to stock their grain about three and a half feet from the ground and covered on all sides with smooth galvanised iron.

In the Kingsthorpe district, hundreds of rats have appeared and are now attacking the mice. The plague is one of the worst known for years. Property owners say rain followed by heavy frosts is needed to combat it.
