  • Description

THE MEKONG RIVER IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREAT WATERWAYS. FOR THE PAST FEW DAYS, THE SWOLLEN WATERS HAVE BEEN THREATENING TO SPILL INTO FOUR OF SOUTH VIETNAM'S RICE-RICH AND MOST POPULATED PROVINCES. IF IT DOES, AS MANY AS 50,000 PEOPLE IN THE PROVINCES ALONG THE CAMBODIAN BORDER COULD BE DRIVEN FROM THEIR HOMES.

ALREADY MORE THAN 5,000 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN EVACUATED FROM FLOODED AREAS, MOST OF THEM IN CHAU DOC PROVINCE, ABOUT 110 MILES EAST OF SAIGON. THE OTHER THREE PROVINCES ARE KIEN PHONG, KEIN TUONG AND AN GIANG.

IN CHAU DOC, MOST OF THE ROADS ARE ALREADY UNDER TWO FEET OF WATER AND IN OTHER PLACES DEEPER STILL.....THE CHILDREN SEEM TO ENJOY THE EXTRA WATER-SPLASHING AND SWIMMING. BUT THE FLOODING IS SERIOUS AND THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT IS TAKING NO CHANCES.

THE FLOODS THIS YEAR APPEAR TO BE CAUSE BY AN ABNORMAL AMOUNT OF RAINFALL ALONG THE UPPER MEKONG IN CAMBODIA AND LAOS.

THE MEKONG DELTA, OF WHICH THE FOUR THREATENED PROVINCE MAKE UP AN INTEGRAL PART, SUPPLIES MOST OF THE RICE NEEDS OF THE NATION.

IN 1961, THE LAST BAD FLOOD YEAR ON THE MEKONG, AN ESTIMATED 465,000 TONS OF RICE WERE LOST. THE DELTA, RICE BOWL OF SOUTH-EAST ASIA, IS UNDER WATER MOST OF THE YEAR. ACCORDING TO REPORTS, THE AREA IS TAKING MUCH OF THE FLOODS IN STRIDE.
