After a weak start, with many promised top track and field stars not appearing on the opening day, an international athletics meeting in Paris, France, picked up on Saturday (18 September).

SYNOPSIS: Many enthusiasts went home disappointed on Friday, but they filled the stands again on Saturday -- and one event that produced an exciting finish was the women's 400 metres sprint.

Among those competing in the event was the Olympic gold medallist, Irena Szewinska of Poland. Szewinska had just come from another athletics meeting in London, where she had won the 200 metres event from British sprinter, Sharon Colyear.

As well as her prowess at 400 metres, Szewinska is also one of the top runners at 100 and 200 metres. On Saturday she started slowly in the 400 metres, but came through the field to win from Hagman of Sweden with local runner Delachenal in third place. Her time of 51-point-three seconds was half a second faster than the Swede's.

In the high jump, Olympic champion Jacek Wszola of Poland was competing against his arch-rival, Dwight Stones of the United States. Guy Drut of France, the Olympic 110 metres hurdle champion, was one of the spectators watching. Wszola could only clear two-point-10 metres.

Stones, the world record holder, went on to clear two-point-21 metres, to give him his second win over the Pole in two days. Wszola finished fourth.
