Many of the world's top canoeists, kayakists and rowers gathered at the Olympic rowing basin at Krylatskoye on May 27 to take part in the 23rd Moscow Regatta. in the women's guadruple sculls, the Soviet national team, inspired by Larisa Popova, beat the Bulgarians, rowing in lane one. The Lithuanian crew took third place. The main event was the women's eights, with the Soviet crew just beating off a determined challenge from the Bulgarians, by half a length. The Soviets also had a good win in the finals of the women's pairs, with Anhelica Kluskauskaite and Nina Cheresina, the world champions, again beating the Bulgarian national team, which had Iskra Velinova at stroke. Lithuanian again took third place.
