  • Description

South Vietnam and the Viet Cong issued orders on Thursday (14 June) to their troops to stop fighting, and to observe what was in effect a second ceasefire.

The deadline to put down arms was noon on Friday (15 June), and soldiers on duty along National Route One, between Tay Ninh and Cu Chi near Saigon read newspapers and listened to radios as they waited for the ceasefire to take effect.

When the time came, it was uneventful, apart from a few cheers from South Vietnamese soldiers, who began to dismantle machineguns almost immediately.

The military command of both sides used radio broadcasts to back up the orders already sent to senior commanders to end all hostilities.
