  • Description

New Zealand left-hander Bob Charles set a scorching pace with a course record of 66 to lead the star studded British open golf championship field by two strokes today (Wednesday) at the Royal Lytham course.

Poker-face Charles, playing over the same course where he won the title in 1963 cracked a smile as he waved his magic putter after his brilliant five-under-par round made possible by only 28 putts.

Another leader today was rather more of a surprise. He is Hugh Jackson of Scotland, who beat many of the world's top golfers with his round of sixty-eight giving him a share in third place.

One of Britain's biggest hopes Tony Jacklin also played brilliantly showing the home crowd the wealth of experience he gained on the tough American circuit this year. He completed the first nine holes in thirty two, three under par and finished the day in second place with Hedley Muscroft of Yorkshire.
