Background: A 1927 Chrysler and a coating of concrete helped Traiko Ivanov and his wife and three sons to escape from Yugoslavia to Greece.

Traiko, who is Bulgarian by birth, emigrated to Yugoslavia a year ago. During this time he laid plans for escaping to the West. For two months he and his sons worked on their old Chrysler turning it into an armoured vehicle. They stripped out the seats, coated the bodywork with a two inch covering of concrete, fixed a steel sheet over the radiator and put in a periscope.

When the car was ready Traiko and his family climbed in, closed the doors and away they went. As they approached the border Traiko put his foot down and the old car nearly burst its sides as it crashed through the barriers.

The Yugoslav frontier guards were so preoccupied watching this strange vehicle speeding along the road that they made no attempts to stop it. Now the Ivanov family are in Salonika deciding where their Chrysler will take them next.
