  • Description

Israel and Syria are due to complete the disengagement of their armies this week under the terms of the agreement signed in Geneva, Switzerland three weeks ago.

On Sunday (23 June) the Israelis evacuated the last strip of Golan Heights territory captured in the October War. The land is near Kuneitra. Additional to the buffer zone strip, Israel also handed over to the United Nations Force a military cemetery deeper inside Syria, near Khan El Arnabah on the Damascus Road, which contains the remains of 780 Syrian soldiers who died in the war.

The Israeli officer who handed the cemetery over to the U.N. said each grave was marked with a headstone with either the name of the dead soldier or a number or other information to help the Syrians identify the graves.

The U.N. officer told his Israeli counterpart he would ensure the area, spread over a large field and cordoned off with white strips similar to those used to mark paths through minefields, would be handed over to the Syrians in its present condition.

At the formal handing over, Colonel Moaz of the Israeli Army said:
Major Porter, a Canadian member of the U.N. team, replied:
The evacuation of the buffer strip and the cemetery area went off without a hitch. The U.N. force were quick to start mine clearing operations soon after the Israelis withdrew. The U.N. troops were mainly Austrian Units and had largely been drawn from the United Nations Emergency Force serving in Sinai.

The final phase of the disengagement is scheduled for Wednesday (26 June).
