  • Description

A mass military parade before President Marien Ngouabi marked the 10th anniversary of the National People's Army (APN) in Congo's capital of Brazzavills on Friday (31 December).

SYNOPSIS: President Ngouabi took a 21-gun salute before he delivered his New Year address to the nation. During his speech, he wished the Congolese people a "better year in 1977". He also said the Congo faced serious economic problems and urged government employees against absenteeism during the coming year. After his speech, President Ngouabi took a salute from units of the Congo's armed forces in a colourful military parade. Soviet and Chinese built tanks headed the parade.

The APN's 10th anniversary coincided with the seventh anniversary of the Congo's only political party -- the Worker's Congolese Party (PCT). The party has not been led by President Ngouabi since its creation in 1969.

The PCT follows a Marxist-Leninist line, but it has experienced some difficulties during its seven year history. Abortive coups against the government were staged in 1970 and 1972. And in December last year, President Ngouabi declared the Congo's revolution "blocked". The government resigned, and was replaced by a ruling select committee of four man.
