  • Description

Visnews filmed June 11 the auction at Sotheby's of Old Master engravings and etchings, American and Italian views, sporting and costume prints and other items.

At the auction - attended by dealers from many European countries and the U.S.A. - sales totalled over GBP30,000 - a new record for Sotheby's. It was the highest total for a print sale held in this country since the war, and the highest ever obtained for such a sale Sotheby's - their previous record was GBP29,000 for a sale in 1929.

A very fine early edition of the set of eighty plates of Francesco Goya's "Los Caprichos" one of then is shown on the film - was sold for GBP2800. The set originally belonged to the first Duke of Wellington and was sent in by the present Duke.

Also filmed were the colour lithograph showing the great fire of New York City and two colour plates from Locher's book showing portraits and dress of Swiss villagers of the twenty two cantons - of particular interest since Switzerland has long been regarded by dealers and collectors alike as the world centre for prints. "The Battle of the Thames, 1813" was another of the coloured lithographs filmed.

In the sale were nearly 100 lots from the collection of the late Irwin Laughlin of the great American steel firm of Jones and Laughlin.
