  • Description

Three young West Germans set out to sail the Atlantic in a 22-foot (6.6 metre) inflatable catamaran today (Monday) but were towed back into Cuxhaven two hours later after being beaten by storms whipping the North Sea. They called for help only a few miles and were towed in by the Cuxhaven Rescue Patrol Vessel.

The Germans 28-year-old, Ruediger Volgar, 30-year-old, Martin Roehrig, and Hans Schuemann, 24 had set out undaunted by stiff winds and reports of force-eight gales in the North Sea.

They had hoped to make the 7,000-mile voyage across the Atlantic, in six weeks, sailing to New York by way if the Azores and Bermuda.

Behind the catamaran, in a slightly smaller craft, the young Germans towed their supplies for the journey.
