  • Description

BRITAIN'S WORSENING INDUSTRIAL TROUBLES TODAY (WEDNESDAY) LED TO AN URGENT MEETING OF THE PRIME MINISTER AND SEVERAL OF HIS MINISTERS, AND AN ACCUSATION BY THE MINISTER OF LABOUR THAT INDUSTRIAL FERMENT WAS BEING CREATED BY COMMUNISTS IN AN EFFORT TO DESTROY BRITAIN'S ECONOMIC RECOVERY.

MR GUNTER, THE LABOUR MINISTER, IN A DIRECT ACCUSATION IN A SPEECH AT GILLINGHAM, IN KENT, SAID THERE WAS LITTLE DOUBT THAT THE COMMUNIST PARTY WAS PLOTTING TO CREATE IN BRITAIN A WINTER OF INDUSTRIAL DISRUPTION. THE COMMUNIST PARTY LATER CATEGORICALLY DENIED THE ACCUSATION, THROUGH ITS SECRETARY, MR JOHN GOLLAN.

INDUSTRIAL TROUBLES HAVE THIS WEEK COME TO A HEAD, WITH DOCKS IDLE WHILE DOCK WORKERS DISPUTE A NEW WORKING AGREEMENT; RAILWAY WORKERS HAVE REFUSED A PAY SETTLEMENT; BUILDING WORKERS ON A SITE IN LONDON FOUGHT WITH POLICE WHEN AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO BREAK A YEAR-OLD STRIKE; AND OTHER INDUSTRIES SUFFER A MALAISE CAUSED BY INDUSTRIAL DISCONTENT.

THE PRIME MINISTER, MR WILSON, HELD AN URGENT MEETING AT HIS RESIDENCE WITH MINISTERS AND TRADE UNION LEADERS TO DISCUSS THE DOCKERS DISPUTE, WHICH IS DELAYING THE EXPORT OF MILLIONS OF POUNDS STERLING WORTH OF GOODS, AND THREATENING BRITAIN'S FINELY BALANCED RESERVES.

NINE THOUSAND DOCKERS ON THE MERSEY - EFFECTING THE BUSY PORTS OF LIVERPOOL AND MANCHESTER - HAVE BEEN ON STRIKE FOR THREE WEEKS. THE STRIKE ALSO AFFECTS SEVERAL HUNDRED DOCK WORKERS IN THE POOL OF LONDON.
