  • Description

Australia's Neil Frazer, No. 2 seed, took first Wimbledon honours June 22 against French contestant, Pierre Darmon. VISNEWS filmed on the centre court as Frazer, loser of last year's men's singles final, won the Wimbledon "curtain-raiser" 6-4 6-4 6-2.

At first it was Darmon who set the pace, gaining all points in the first game. But after these initial blows, the Frenchman failed to quell the biting strength of Frazer's service. Trading volley for volley, the Australian player went on to make it a decisive victory.

Darmon, last year's loser of the opening match against champion Lew Hoad, lost control of the game after the first set. A double-fault by the Frenchman in the fifth game marked the turning point for Frazer who put his opponent into retreat for the rest of play.

Surprising victory of the day came afterwards, when 18-year-old American high-school student, Earl Buchholz scored a dramatic win over No. 3 seed, Nicola Pietrangeli, Italian holder of the French crown. The young American brought down the champion 6-4 3-6 7-5 7-5.

The opening matches, held in brilliant sunshine, were watched by more than 20,000 tennis fans.
