Background: Four people were killed and another three seriously injured when a gas-main exploded in a side-street in Madrid, Spain on Sunday (17 November).

The blast left a crater about three yards (2.7 metres) deep and 20 yards wide.

About 25 wrecked cars, glass and other debris from nearby houses blocked the street until firemen started a clearing operation with bulldozers and towing vehicles.

SYNOPSIS: Two men and two women were killed and three other people seriously injured when a gas main exploded in a Madrid sidestreet on Sunday. The blast left a crater about three yards deep and twenty yards wide.

About twenty-five cars were wrecked in the explosion and glass and other debris from nearby houses littered the street.

Police and firemen moved in to start clearing up with bulldozers and towing vehicles - but in will be some time before life returns to normal in the surrounding area.
