Background: The Lebanese capital, Beirut, has experienced its first round of factional fighting this year. On Friday evening (8 January) a car bomb exploded in West Beirut, causing severe damage to property but without loss of life. Militiamen of the Shi-ite Moslem group, Amal, and the Communist Action Organisation, also clashed in the Moslem sector of West Beirut, despite a Syrian-imposed ceasefire. The fighting has been described as some of the heaviest the capital has seen for some months, with at least seven killed. Joint forces of the Lebanese government and the Arab Peacekeeping force, from Syria, have tried to move in to impose a ceasefire.
