    With more than a third of Cypris' total population of 600,000 new refuges, the authorities are taking urgent action to prevent the spread of illness and epidemics.

    Ormydia Camp near Dhekelia is typical of the cramped conditions in which many of the refugees have been forced to live sine the Turkish invasion. A church near the town as been taken ever by one of the medical groups which have been carriyng out a mass inoculation programme throughout the island. The jabs they administer are to prevent typhoid.

    The livestock the refugees have taken with them to the camps have also crated a health hazard. To prevent the spread of animal diseases, shepherds are encouraged to take their sheep to the sea for a swim every two weeks to rid them of dust and dirt.

    Greek and Turkish Cypriot authorities are to begin exchanging their sick and wounded prisoners seen under the agreement reached by their leaders Detainees aged under 18 and over 50 are also included in the agreement reached on Wednesday (11 September).
