Background: A Titan Two rocket blasted an unmanned Gemini capsule yesterday (Wednesday) into orbit in what jubilant scientists at Cape Kennedy, Florida, described as a "near-perfect shot". The shot was a significant stage of the American moon exploration programme. The Gemini, a two-seater capsule weighing 7,000 lbs, will carry two astronauts into orbit before the end of 1964.

The unmanned capsule was launched at 1100 Eastern Standard Time (1600 GMT) precisely on schedule. Five and a half minutes later, it was in orbit at altitudes varying between 100 and 190 miles above the earth.
