Background: The Ikemba of Nnewi, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwo Ojukwu has declared his support for Nigeria's ruling National Party (NPN). His speech during the Igbo solidarity rally in the Aba sports stadium in Imo State ended months of speculation over which political party the former Biafran secessionist leader would join. Chief Ojukwu arrived at the January 14 rally by open car to an enthusiastic welcome which was heralded by a 21-gun salute. He walked among the thousands of National Party supporters who had come to the rally to hear his declaration and was presented with kola nuts, the traditional greeting. It was in August 1982 that Chief Ojukwu returned from exile after his Ibo tribe's defeat in the 1967-70 civil war. His address emphasised the six months of intensive study made before arriving at the decision to align with the NPN. He stressed that the civil war ended 13 years ago and that he now intended to contribute to the development and progress of Nigeria. At a news conference in Enugu on January 17, Chief Ojukwu said he could be persuaded to run for president in the 1987 general elections, if the NPN candidacy fell to an Ibo.
