  • Description

The town of Bhiwandi and the surrounding area in the Indian State of Maharashtra were quiet on Saturday (16 May) after the recent religious riots in which more than 150 people died.

The curfew that was imposed during the bitter Hindu-Moslem clashes more than a week ago has been relaxed and the situation was described as completely under control.

In the nearby town of Thana on the outskirts of Bombay police were also in command after looting and arson in riots on Monday (12 May).

Medical units have been moved into the area to give anti-cholera injections.

Bhiwandi factories and shops were open again and home guard officials were clearing up debris left by the riots.

Most of the dead are believed to be Moslems. The Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi was due to visit the troubled area over the weekend.

The riots have bear the worst communal violence in India since 4000 were killed in Ahmedabad last year.
