  • Description

Mrs Indira Gandhi, India's Prime Minister, flew into Calcutta on Friday (17th July) for talks on Law and Order in West Bengal.

At Dum Dum airport Mrs Gandhi was greeted by the Governor of West Bengal, Mr Dhawan, before leaving for a round of talks with officials during her 9-hour visit.

A large but orderly crowd braved rain to welcome the Indian Prime Minister. During the past year West Bengal has been plagued by political turmoil, labour unrest and violence which eventually brought about the collapse of its Marxist-dominated Coalition Government last March. Since then West bengal has been ruled from Delhi by Mrs Gandhi's government, in the name of the President, but the maintenance of law and order has proved a continuing major problem.

After receiving gifts of flowers outside the Governor's House, Mrs Gandhi spent several minutes talking to socialist demonstrators who urged that the United Nations be called on to investigate the influx of Hindu refugees from East Pakistan.
