    A ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE BRISTOL FREIGHTER CRASHED WHILE COMING IN TO LAND AT MARVILLE AIR BASE IN NORTH-EASTERN FRANCE LATE LAST NIGHT (MONDAY), KILLING EIGHT OF THE 11 PEOPLE ABOARD.

    IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT CHILDREN WERE AMONG THE SIX PASSENGERS - ALL SERVICEMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES - BUT IT HAS NOT BEEN DISCLOSED WHETHER THEY WERE AMONG THE THREE SURVIVORS, WHO WERE ALL INJURED.

    THE PLANE WAS ON A FLIGHT FROM GATWICK, SOUTH OF LONDON, AND CRASHED INTO WOODS NEAR THE RUNWAY AT MARVILLE IT OPERATED A REGULAR DAILY SERVICE TO BRITAIN, AND USUALLY CARRIED MILITARY PERSONNEL AND MEN ON LEAVE.

    RESCUE OPERATIONS BEGAN IMMEDIATELY, WITH AMBULANCES TAKING THE DEAD AND INJURED TO THE CANADIAN BASE AT MARVILLE.
