  • Description

In her capacity as President of the Greek Red Cross, Queen Frederika was filmed by Visnews June 24 as she reviewed detachments of nurses and volunteers during an Athens parade to mark the centenary of the International Red Cross movement.

The Queen, a devoted worker for the sick, refugees and war orphans of her country, was accompanied by her two daughters, Princesses Sophie and Irene. This was Her Majesty's first public engagement since returning from Switzerland where her husband, King Paul, recently underwent an eye operation.

After his terrible experiences among the wounded on the battlefield of Solferino, Italy during the Franco-Italian-Austrian war in 1859, a young Swiss business man, Henri Dumant, wrote a book urging civilian volunteers to assist war-wounded. The book, distributed to heads of Government throughout the world, led to the 1964 Geneva Convention. Eighty-four countries how have national Red cross Associations affiliated to the International parent body. Its symbol is formed by the Swiss national flag reversed ... a Red Cross on a white background.
