Demonstrators in New York have been protesting at the way in which the Attica prison riot was squalled last Monday (13th Sept). and in particular at the support given State Corrections Commissioner, Russel Oswald, by Governor Nelson Rockefeller. Oswald's decision for National Guardsmen and police to make an armed assault on the prison was openly commended by Governor Rockefeller. Ten hostages and thirty prisoners died in the assault. Demonstrators have also been expressing dissatisfaction with the way in which the authorities issued conflicting reports of the assault, injuries, and manner of deaths. On Saturday (18th Sept) demonstrators marched through New York City and rallied outside the Rockefeller Centre. An effigy of the Governor and many banners were prominently display.
