    THE HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR NEW ZEALAND, T.L. MACDONALD, AND THE NEW ZEALAND FINANCE MINISTER, H.R. LAKE, ATTENDED THE TOPPING-OUT CEREMONY FOR THE NEW ZEALAND HOUSE IN LONDON, SEPT 8.

    THE NEW BUILDING - WHICH IS TO REPLACE THE 45-YEAR-OLD NEW ZEALAND HOUSE IN THE STRAND BY JUNE 1962 - IS THE FIRST TO BE ERECTED AS THE LONDON OFFICE OF A COMMONWEALTH GOVERNMENT FOR ABOUT 30 YEARS. WORK ON THE SITE - ON THE CORNER OF PALL MALL AND THE HAYMARKET - STARTED IN MAY 1959, AND ON MAY 16, 1960, PRIME MINISTER WALTER NASH WAS IN LONDON TO LAY THE FOUNDATION STONE.

    RISING TO A HEIGHT OF 229FT, WITH A 15-STOREY TOWER BLOCK SET ON A FOUR-STOREY BASE, THE BUILDING OUTSTRIPS NELSON'S COLUMN BY SOME 60FT. HALF A MILLION CUBIC FEET OF REINFORCED AND PRECAST CONCRETE HAVE GONE INTO THE MAKING OF IT.

    EVERY FLOOR OF THE BUILDING WILL HAVE CONTINUOUS GLAZING TO ITS EXTERNAL WALLS, INCORPORATING SOME OF THE LARGEST SHEETS OF PLATE GLASS - UP TO 18 BY 9 1/2FT - EVER USED IN AN OFFICE BLOCK.

    THE HIGH COMMISSIONER'S SUITE - WITH A LARGE OPEN TERRACE AND ROOF GARDEN OVERLOOKING PALL MALL - WILL SHARE THE THIRD FLOOR WITH A LIBRARY, PUBLIC READING ROOM AND THE EXTERNAL AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT. FACILITIES BETWEEN STREET LEVEL AND THIRD FLOOR WILL INCLUDE A BANK, RECEPTION ROOMS, A CINEMA FOR 60 PEOPLE, A TERRACE GARDEN WITH POND, AND OFFICE ACCOMMODATION. MOST OF THE OFFICES WILL BE IN THE TOWER BLOCK. ALL FLOORS ARE SERVED BY FOUR HIGH-SPEED PASSENGER LIFTS AND ONE GOODS LIFT, AS WELL AS STAIRCASES.
