    AN AMERICAN CHEMIST, DR LINUS PAULING, 62, WAS AWARDED THE 1962 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE YESTERDAY (THURSDAY). HE LIVES IN CALIFORNIA.

    DR PAULING, WHO WAS THE NOBEL CHEMISTRY LAUREATE IN 1954 FOR HIS WORK ON THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF THE NATURE OF THE CHEMICAL BOND AND THE STRUCTURE OF MOLECULES, BECAME ONLY THE SECOND PERSON TO WIN TWO NOBEL PRIZES. THE FIRST WAS MADAME CURIE.

    ALTHOUGH NO MOTIVES FOR DR PAULING'S AWARD HAVE BEEN GIVEN, HE IS KNOWN AS A FIRM OPPONENT OF NUCLEAR TESTS. IN 1958 HE ORGANISED A WORLD-WIDE PETITION TO THE UNITED NATIONS SIGNED BY 11,000 SCIENTISTS AGAINST TESTS.

    THE PRIZE CONSISTS OF A GOLD MEDAL, AN ILLUMINATED DIPLOMA AND A CASH AWARD WORTH ABOUT GBP18,000.
