  • Description

The government of Papua New Guinea and secessionists of the copper-rich island of Bougainville announced a truce on Wednesday (28 January) after three days of tension and violent demonstrations.

Prime Minister Michael Somare and secessionist leader John Momis agreed to hold talks on their dispute.

The Bougainville secessionists, who unilaterally declared independence from Papua New Guinea last September, have been demanding heavy royalties from Bougainville Copper Limited, run by a subsidiary of the British Rio Tinto Zinc group.

Where their deadline was not met, islanders began ransacking buildings and tearing airstrips.

The government rushed 300 extra police to the island and after the truer re-established control of three rebel-held centres without resistance.

Earlier, secessionist supporters had blocked the airstrip at Buin, a small town on Bougainville's south coast, to stop a plane-load of policemen from landing.

The police were flying to the island to rescue two government employees and their families held hostage by the secessionists.

The day before, Buin was the scene of wild demonstrations when more than 800 secessionists attacked government buildings with axes and forced the evacuation of employees by helicopter to Kieta, the island's main town.
