  • Description

The run-up to Spain's first general election in 40 years on June 15 is well under way, with all the major political parties holding official election rallies within the first days of the opening of the campaign. After the legalisation of the Communist part, a number of left-wing? parties and alliances have appeared to contest the elections.

SYNOPSIS: Hundreds of left-wing sympathisers flocked to this cinema in northern Madrid on Thursday evening (26 May ) for the inaugural meeting of a new confederation of three Marxist parties, known as the Workers United Front (FUT). One of the leaders of the socialist alliance is a school-teacher, julio Rodriguez Arenseni, who re-iterated the Front's demands for the dissolution of police forces, amnesty for political prisoners and a Spanish republic. The left-wing parties face a hard campaign if they are to make any head-why against the influential Democratic Centre Union (U?D), led by Prime Minister Adolfo Suraez. The UCD would take more than 20 per cent of the votes, according to a newspaper poll, published two days before, at the start of the election campaign. With the Spanish Socialist Workers Party trailing with 13 per cent, the Workers United Front is among about 150 other parties vying for the remainder of the vote.

Minority parties like the FUT will be trying to appeal to the as-yet undecided voter, and the poll revealed there was still a substantial number of them.
