  • Description

    VISNEWS cameras were
at the small Danish church in the town of Vigerslev when Mrs. Johane Anderson,
soon to be ordained as one of Denmark's two women priests, prepared small
    children for Confirmation.

Women in Denmark have won the right to become priests - but the decision
threatens to become a national issue. Much bitterness has been caused by the
decision. Some churches in Denmark refuse to allow women priests to officiate.

Miss Helga Jensen, also soon to be ordained, was 'boycotted' by the congregation
at Ikast, Jutland, when due to preach a sermon there recently.

30 women are studying Theology at Upsala University, Sweden. So far none have
applied for ordination although the Church of Sweden has decided to admit women
to priesthood. Dr Fisher, Archbishop of Canterbury, sent a 'Personal and
Private' letter to the Church of Sweden pointing out that the Communion between
the Churches of England and Sweden allowed Swedish priests to conduct services
in England. This would cause embarrassment in England where women are not
    allowed to conduct services.
