  • Description

King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola of Belgium began a four-day visit to Senegal on Tuesday (25 February). Much of their stay was to be devoted to seeing and discussing cooperation projects between the two countries.

President Leopold Sedar Senghor, who met the royal couple at the airport, was later to praise the excellent relations already existing between the two countries. And he warned that such cooperation between developing and industrial countries is essential if a Third World War is to be prevented.

If the poor countries were driven to despair, he warned, they would have nothing to lose in a new war. The King told him he favoured a revision of international economic systems, adding that peace was unthinkable without justice.

While in Senegal, the King was due to visit a horticultural research centre financed by Belgium, and was to lay the foundation stone of a health centre Belgium has promised to fund.
