  • Description

The West German yacht Saudade won the first Inshore race -- the second of four races in the Admiral's Cup yachting series -- at Cowes, United Kingdom, on Monday (6 August), and maintained the West German team's lead with a score of 355 points.

Yachts representing sixteen countries in the 30-mile (48 kms) race had to compete not only with each other but also with heavy seas, lashing gales and torrential rain. The Brazilian yacht Saga was second and Britain's Quailo III was third.

The last Admiral's Cup was won by Britain two years ago when Prime Minister Edward Heath, led them to victory in Morning Cloud. But there has been some controversy this year as to whether he should return from the Commonwealth Summit Conference in Canada in time for the last race.
