Background: One hundred thousand young Formosans marched through the island's capital, Taipei, on 'Youth Day', Mar 29, to hear a City Hall address by Nationalist Chinese President Chiang Kai-Shek.
In Taipei Stadium Vice-President Chen Cheng took the salute of Army, navy and Air Force units before a crowd of 20,000 people.
President Chiang Kai-Shek told his audience that if the mainland anti-Communist movement continued its growth, Nationalist reconquest from Formosa would be possible within 6 years. "Hatred of our mainland compatriots for the Communists is much stronger than the old popular hatred against the Manchus," he said.
Youth Day commemorates 72 revolutionaries killed in Canton, China, 1911, in a revolt against the Manchu imperial dynasty; the same year a revolution broke out which led to their expulsion and the formation of the Chinese Republic.
