  • Description

In France, the Socialist Party, led by M. Francois Mitterand, launched their campaign for the General Election next March at a rally in Paris on Sunday (20 November).

SYNOPSIS: The Socialist Party chose to launch their fight for power at a fete in the industrial north east of Paris. It was a festival in a manner usually favoured by the Communists. For many, it marked the breach which now divides the Left in France. Earlier this months talks between parties -- the Socialists, the Communists and the small left-wing radical groups broke down. Now M. Mitterand appears to stand alone, although political commentators have not ruled out a new alliance before the elections in March.

    M. Mitterand leads what is generally considered to be France's biggest political party, although the Gaullists hold the largest number of seats in the National Assembly. If the elections next March change this position and put the Socialists ahead, French political commentators have suggested that M. Mitterand could cap his 30-year career in politics by becoming Prime Minister.

In the last weeks, with the rupture of the parties of the Left in France, the political picture in by no means clear, but it has been suggested that M. Mitterand's firm stand against the Communist Party -- he has said they had gone too far -- could win him votes from a hesitant left wing electorate who disapproved of his earlier link with the Communists.

At the rally, M. Mitterand told his supporters that the Socialist Party was the champion of collective, national and international liberties. Any union of the left had meaning only because it brought together millions of men and women.
