    British drivers A.R. Fall and L. Drews were on Monday (Dec 13th) declared winners of the eighth Ethiopian Highland Motor Rally.

    Driving a Datsun 1600, Fall and Drews led for most of 2,625 miles (4,200 kilometers) journey.

    The rally started from Addis Ababa on Thursday (Dec 9th) - and was run over some of the wildest country in Africa.

    Ten of the 25 starters dropped out on the journey with breakdowns or mechanical trouble.

    SYNOPSIS: Addis Ababa - and the starting point for the eighth Ethiopian Highland Motor Rally. Twenty-five cars started in the event.

    Among the drivers - the Ethiopian crew, G. Missallidis and O. Massa, driving a Datsun 1600.

    And arriving to flag the starters away - Crown Prince Asfa Wossen.

    The rally is run over some of the wildest country in Africa - and was to prove a tough test for drivers and cars. When results were declared on Monday it emerged that Datsuns had finished first and second...with British drivers Fall and Drews taking winning honours. Italian crews were well represented - here's Criveller and Biesuz leaving in their Volkswagen 1500.

    Of the 25 starters, ten failed to complete the course. They dropped out with breakdowns and mechanical problems.

    Most of the entries got away to a good start on the fast flat roads out of Addie Ababa. The more difficult sections were to come later.

    Another BMW -- and another Italian crew at the wheel. The drivers are M. Guidi and F. Celona. They were to have the misfortune to break down only a short distance from the start.

    A Fiat 125 is driven by italians S. Zanetti and G. Guidi. They passed their countrymen in the BMW on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. The rally started on Thursday -- and ended on Sunday.
