    Twenty-three people were wounded after a bomb blast ripped through a crowded vegetable market north of Tel Aviv on Wednesday (6 July). Police said they believed the bomb was planted by Arab guerrillas.

    SYNOPSIS: Five of the victims were badly hurt. One man had his leg blown off and a pregnant woman was hit in the abdomen by flying debris.

    Stalls were splintered and piles of blood-spattered fruit littered the market. Motorists stopped to pick up wounded before ambulances arrived.

    Security forces rounded up dozens of Arabs. A police spokesman said some were held to protect them from angry Israeli stallholders. The bomb went the market was packed with people.

    According to reports it was a fairly large bomb planted in a vegetable crate in a side street leading to the main market, five miles from Tel Aviv. Within seconds of the blast, ambulances rushed to the scene and took the injured to nearby hospitals.

    Authorities had been expecting some sort of violence to mark the opening of the trial of two young West Germans and three Arab guerrilla accused of trying to attack an Israeli airliner in Kenya. There was no definite indication, however, that the trial and the bomb were linked. The market place is also located close to he pre-1967 boundary between Israel and Jordan. Hundreds of Arabs from Israeli-controlled areas customarily throng to the market to sell produce.
