Background: World Cup soccer...and Brazil, one of the favourites, were held on Saturday (3 June) to a one-ball draw by Sweden in their opening match in Group three. The match in Mar del Plata, ended in a flurry of Brazilian protests as British referee Clive Thomas below full-time a split second before Zico headed the ball into the net for what would have been the winning goal to Brazil.
SYNOPSIS: Brazil, in the lighter shirts, and kicking left to right, did most of the early attacking. Edino ran onto a splendid pass, but his controlled shot went inches wide.
The Swedes were not overawed. Their counter attack was unlucky when Sjoberg fired just over the crossbar.
Brazil were crowding the Swedish goal area. First, a ground shot was blocked, then the rebound was booted too high.
In the thirty-seventh minute, Brazil was jolted. Two neat passes set up a shot for ??? and, this time, he was on target.
Soon after, Sweden could have made it two, but Lenny Larsson's header hit the crossbar.
On the stroke of half-time, Brazil drew level. A floating cross is nimbly trapped by Reinaldo, and he strokes it past the goalkeeper.
In the second half, Sweden's Wendt continued his harassment...but his shot missed narrowly.
Oddly, the Brazilians had settled into a predictable pattern, through Zico's brilliant control almost gave him a goal from a cross, made from the goal-line.
Zico was leading Brazilian efforts to shake off the persistent Swedes, but the breakthrough would not come.
Brazil through they made it in the final two moves of the match. From a corner, Zoco hurtled the ball and himself into the net. But jubilation strangled in their throats. British referee Clive Thomas declared the ball was dead, and the goal was not allowed.
