    ABOUT 1,700 REPRESENTATIVES ELECTED AS PRESIDENT, CHUNG KU-YUNG, A LAWYER AND DEPUTY LEADER OF THE PARTY PREPARATORY COMMITTEE.KIM CHUNG-YUL, A FORMER DEFENCE MINISTER, WAS ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF THE PARTY.

    THE D.R.P.WAS PIONEERED BY KIM CHING-PIL, A FORMER CIA DIRECTOR TO SUPPORT GENERAL PARK CHUNG HEE'S MILITARY GOVERNMENT.BUT KIM HIMSELF WAS NOT PRESENT AT THE CONVENTION; HAVING RESIGNED FROM THE PARTY FOLLOWING AN INTERNAL STRUGGLE FOR POWER.

    THE PARTY PRESIDENT, CHUNG KU-YUNG, SAID THE DRP NEEDED STRONG AND COMPETENT LEADERSHIP.THE PARTY FORMALLY DECLARED THAT ITS AIM WAS TO ESTABLISH "A LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT" WHOSE BASIC IDEALS WOULD STEM FROM THE MILITARY REVOLUTION.

    ON THE FOLLOWING DAY (WEDNESDAY), 48 FORMER POLITICIANS, INCLUDING SOME ONCE PARTY LEADERS, TOOK AN OATH PROMISING TO ACCEPT GENERAL PARK CHUNG HEE'S PROGRAMME FOR "POLITICAL STABILISATION".FOR HIS PART, GENERAL PARK RENOUNCED HIS PLAN TO CONTEST THE PRESIDENCY AS A CIVILIAN.HE ANNOUNCED A TOTAL CLEARANCE OF BLACKLISTED FORMER POLITICIANS.THE GENERAL, DRESSED IN MILITARY UNIFORM, CRIED WHEN READING THE LAST PARAGRAPH OF HIS STATEMENT.

    THEN THE CHIEFS OF FORCES TOOK OATH DECLARING THEIR NEUTRALITY AND SUPPORT FOR A CIVILIAN GOVERNMENT.
