  • Description

A HIGH-POWERED PNEUMATIC 'CAN OPENER', DESIGNED TO CUT OPEN VEHICLES INVOLVED IN ROAD ACCIDENTS, HAS BEEN DEVELOPED BY AN ENGINEERING COMPANY IN ENGLAND.

THE OPENER, POWERED BY COMPRESSED AIR, WORKS ON THE SAME PRINCIPLE AS A PNEUMATIC DRILL. THE CUTTING TOOL, LIKE A CHISEL, VIBRATES THOUSANDS OF TIMES A MINUTE, SLICING THROUGH BODY METAL RAPIDLY.

THE PNEUMATIC OPENER IS PARTICULARLY USEFUL IN ACCIDENTS WHERE PETROL, OIL AND FUEL HAVE BEEN SPILT ON TO THE ROAD. IN SUCH CASES THE USE OF OXY-ACETYLENE EQUIPMENT WOULD BE DANGEROUS BECAUSE OF THE FIRE RISK.

THE MACHINE WAS DESIGNED FOLLOWING SUGGESTIONS FROM THE CHIEF FIRE OFFICE IN OXFORDSHIRE, MR. TIMOTHY WHITE. HE BELIEVED THAT MANY ROAD DEATHS COULD BE AVOIDED IF PEOPLE COULD BE FREED MORE QUICKLY.

THE CUTTING MACHINE IS MANNED BY TWO FIREMEN WITH SPECIAL TRAINING IN HANDLING THEM. THE FIREMEN ARE EQUIPPED WITH LUMINOUS RED JACKETS FOR OCCASIONS WHEN THEY MIGHT BE WORKING AT NIGHT ON BADLY-LIT ROADS.
