Background: A STORM AMONG DELEGATES OVER THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S NEW CURBS ON COMMONWEALTH IMMIGRANTS SEEMED LIKELY TONIGHT (SUNDAY) TO DOMINATE THE RULING LABOUR PARTY'S ANNUAL CONFERENCE WHICH OPENS AT BLACKPOOL TOMORROW. MOST OF THE DELEGATES, INCLUDING MR. WILSON, THE PRIME MINISTER AND PARTY LEADER, HAVE NOW GATHERED IN BLACKPOOL, A MAJOR SEA-SIDE RESORT CENTRE, AND SO HAVE A LARGE NUMBER OF YOUNG LEFT-WING EXTREMISTS WHO TODAY STAGED DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST GOVERNMENT POLICIES.

THIS MORNING MR. WILSON WENT TO THE NORTH SHORE METHODIST CHURCH IN BLACKPOOL TO READ THE LESSON. MR. BROWN READ THE OTHER LESSON. MEANWHILE, LEFT-WING EXTREMISTS OF THE YOUNG SOCIALISTS AND THE SOCIALIST LABOUR LEAGUE STAGE DEMONSTRATIONS IN THE STREETS OF THE RESORT CITY IN PROTEST AGAINST GOVERNMENT POLICIES, SUCH AS BRITAIN'S SUPPORT FOR THE UNITED STATES IN SOUTH VIETNAM, AND ITS PROPOSED RESTRICTIONS ON COMMONWEALTH IMMIGRATION.

BOTH THESE QUESTIONS WILL BE DEBATED IN THE CONFERENCE ITSELF, AND THE QUESTION OF RESTRICTED IMMIGRATION IS EXPECTED TO COME IN FOR PARTICULAR CRITICISM. ON WEDNESDAY, THE DELEGATES WILL DISCUSS ONE OF MORE THAN 25 EMERGENCY RESOLUTIONS HIGHLY CRITICAL OF THE GOVERNMENT'S DECISION LAST MONTH TO LIMIT WORK VOUCHERS TO 8,500 COMMONWEALTH IMMIGRANTS A YEAR. SIXTEEN LABOUR MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT ARE MEETING TO CO-ORDINATE PLANS FOR THE CRITICAL DEBATE.
