Baseball...and thousands of screaming fans packed Chicago stadium on Friday to see their home team--the Cubs--go down to the visiting Cincinnati Reds.. T.V.N. reporter Charles Amundsen describes the game's highlights:"

"Johnny Bench got the Reds rolling in the first innings when he hit a three-run homer. Bench leads the National League and R.B.I'S(runs-batted-in) and is leading his nearest rival at the catcher's position in the All-Star balloting by a six-to-one margin. To no-one's surprise, Bench was hit by pitcher Rick Rushell his next time at bat.

"Many Trio got the big hit as the Cubs tied the score in their half of the first. Trio's bases--loaded single off Reds's starter Jack Billingham--brought him two of the runs... and to no-one's surprise Trio was hit by Billingham his next time at bat.

"It was six-five Reds in the sixth when Jerry Morales put the Cubs in front for the first time with a three-run homer. It came off Clay Carroll...who had relieved Billingham in the third innings.

"Cubs's reliever Oscar Zamora lost the lead in the eighth when George foster homered with a man on. Keith Rose also homered in that innings. Cincinnati leads the National League in hitting... and the Reds came into this game with eighteen wins in the last twenty-three games. The home-run was Foster's tenth..not bad for a man who bats eighth in the line-up . "This is Charles Amundsen reporting."

Background: Thousands of eager baseball fans filled the stadium in Chicago on Friday (13 June) to watch their home team, the Cubs, play the visiting Cincinnati Reds.

The Reds went int the game with something of a psychological advantage. They had wan 16 of their last 23 games, whereas the Cubs had gone down 3-4 to a Texan team, the Houston Astros, only two days before.

With National League leader in homers and runs-battled-in, Johnny Bench,on their side, the Reds looked as though they had nothing to fear... despite the obvious enthusiasm of the Chicago fans.

Homers by Bench and team-mates George Foster and Keith Rose illustrated the Reds' winning streak...and even big hits by Cubs' stars Manny Trio and Jerry Morales could do nothing to alter the fact the Reds showed themselves the superior team.. and the eventual victors.
