  • Description

The fifteenth anniversary of Taiwan Restoration Day was celebrated throughout the Island of Formosa on Oct. 25. Main celebrations in the capital, Taipei, began with a rally addressed by the Mayor, Huang Chi-Rui.

Later in the day, the people of Taipei continued festivities in typically Chinese fashion with a noisy and colourful masquerade parade through the city. Musicians playing traditional Chinese instruments headed the parade. The people of Taipei turned out in force to take part. Children displayed their skill on stills as the parade proceeded through the city's streets.

Highlights of the colourful display were the progress of a tall, black-faced goddess who was followed by an equally tall goddess with a white face.

In a statement released to mark Restoration Day, the President, Chiang Kai-Shek, praided the population for their co-operation in making the island a better place to live in. He also urged the people to work and fight for the recovery of the mainland.
