  • Description

CASTORS "THUNDERBIRD" ABBEY, THE GHANAIAN WELTERWEIGHT BOXER, HAD A NARROW BUT UNANIMOUS POINTS VICTORY OVER BRITISH BOXER BRIAN McCAFFERY IN THEIR COMMONWEALTH WELTERWEIGHT ELIMINATION TITLE FIGHT AT THE ACCRA SPORTS STADIUM ON SATURDAY.

REFEREE FOR THE BOUT, COLONEL SLATER MADE THE SCORE 57 POINTS FOR ABBEY AND 55 POINTS FOR MCCAFFERY. THE TWO JUDGES GAVE 58 AND 51 FOR ABBEY TO MCCAFFERY'S 55 AND 50.

BEFORE THE FIGHT STARTED A TWO-MINUTE SILENCE WAS OBSERVED IN MEMORY OF THE LATE GENERAL EMMANUEL KOTOKA.

THE FIGHT GOT UNDER WAY TO A BACKGROUND BEAT OF "ATUMPAN" DRUMS. CASTORS ABBEY WAS THE FIRST TO ENTER THE RING. MCCAFFERY'S ENTRANCE WAS MARKED WITH A FANFARE OF TRUMPETS FROM MUSICIANS OF THE GHANA ARMY.

ABBEY MADE AN AGGRESSIVE BEGINNING TO THE BOUT, KEEPING MCCAFFERY ON THE DEFENSIVE WITH A FLURRY OF LEFTS AND RIGHTS TO THE HEAD.

FOR THE FIRST FIVE ROUNDS THE FIGHT FAVOURED ABBEY, BUT FROM THEN MCCAFFERY COUNTER-ATTACKED WITH A BARRAGE OF BODY BLOWS. BY THE TENTH ROUND MCCAFFERY HAD VIRTUALLY REDRESSED THE BALANCE, BUT ABBEY HELD THE EDGE UNTIL THE FINAL BELL.

AT THE END OF THE BOUT MCCAFFERY TOLD AN INTERVIEWER THAT HE THOUGHT HE HAD WON THE EVENT. HE DESCRIBED ABBEY AS A "HUMAN MACHINE", AND SAID HE WOULD LIKE TO MEET HIM IN A RETURN BOUT.
