ON WEDNESDAY (21 FEBRUARY) STUDENTS HEARD A LECTURE BY THE CHIEF EDITOR OF SOVIET TELEVISION NEWS, MR. BIRYUKOV.

    THE THEME OF THE COURSE IS ' THE DAILY PRESS IN AFRICA', AND DEALS WITH TECHNIQUES OF GATHERING AND TOLD THE JOURNALIST OF DEVELOPMENTS IN SOVIET TELEVISION.

    MR. BIRYUKOV, WHO CRITICISED THE COMMERCIAL ASPECT OF TELEVISION IN THE WEST, SAID THAT THE MEDIUM HAD A VITAL PART TO PLAY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICA -- AS LONG AS IT REMAINED ESSENTIALLY EDUCATIONAL. THIS, SAID MR. BIRYUKOV, HAD SEEN THE AIM OF THE TRIAL PROGRAMMES SCREENED BY THE SENEGALESE GOVERNMENT.

    AT THE END OF HIS STAY IN DAKAR, MR. BIRYUKOV IS TO VISIT OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRIES.
