  • Description

Rome police made several arrests among groups of students who marched through the city, Oct 15, in the latest of five days' right-wing demonstrations against Austria over the Lower Tyrol dispute.

More than 700 students tried to storm the Austrian Embassy in Rome, where police with jeeps, lorries and water trucks were well prepared for the onslaught and determined to prevent a recurrence of the Oct 11 incident, when an Austrian flag was burned on the steps of the building.

As the students got within 100 yards of the Embassy, police made a charge and dispersed the crowd. Scuffles lasted for more than an hour. Students were also reported to have insulted and jostled Jewish shopkeepers.

Lower Tyrol was ceded to Italy by Austria at the end of World War I. Some Austrian quarters are now campaigning for autonomy for the German-speaking minority in the region, who they say have been treated badly by the Italians.
