    FLAMES THREATENED SOME NEARBY APARTMENTS AND TENANTS WERE EVACUATED, CARRYING A FEW BELONGINGS WITH THEM. THEY WERE ABLE TO RETURN WHEN THE FIRE WAS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL. POLICE FOUND TRACES OF INCENDIARY BOMBS NEAR THE PLANT AND AUTHORITIES SAID LATER THAT THE FIRE WAS THE WORK OF SABOTEURS FIRING INCENDIARY BULLETS INTO THE TANK.

    MORE FUEL WAS PROVIDED FOR THE FLAMES WHEN A PROPANE GAS INSTALLATION CLOSE BY CAUGHT FIRE AND VALVES WERE THROWN OPEN TO PREVENT THE GAS EXPLODING. FIREMAN BATTLED FOR EIGHT HOURS, GIVING UP HOPE OF SAVING THE BLAZING STORAGE TANK, THEY SUCCEEDED IN PREVENTING FLAMES FROM SPREADING TO MORE TANKS, THE PROPERTY OF ANOTHER COMPANY, ONLY 500 YARDS AWAY.

    THIS ACT OF SABOTAGE WAS BELIEVED TO BE THE WORK OF ANTI-GOVERNMENT ELEMENTS WHO HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN SEVERAL RECENT DISTURBANCES - ONLY THE DAY BEFORE THEY CLASHED WITH POLICE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO HOLD A MAY DAY PARADE IN DEFIANCE OF A GOVERNMENT BAN. GUATEMALAN PRESIDENT MIGUEL YDIGORAS FUENTES HAS CALLED HIS CABINET INTO EMERGENCY SESSION TO CONSIDER IMPOSING MARTIAL LAW.
